Garbarini Cuts the Mustard on Maho

August 8, 2008 -

What a difference two weeks makes!  A couple of weeks ago United Anglers struggled to catch dinks on "Deadwood", while this week United Anglers struggled to bring their monsters of Mahopac to the weigh-in table.  24 fishermen participated in the 10:00pm to 7:00am slugfest.

12 bags over 10lbs were brought to the scales; 7 of which topped 15lbs.  Spinnerbaits, crankbaits, topwater, and some plastics seemed to be the primary lures of choice.  The weather gods were even kind enough to spare the club from the potential rain. The night turned out to be a quiet one under the stars that was intermittently interrupted by moments of sheer bass madness.

John Garbarini coaxed 18.16lbs of slob largies and smallies into the boat for his second first place finish of the year.  This marks 4 tournaments in a row where John has finished in the top 2.  He also captured lunker with a 4.67lb smallmouth.  Second place went to former AOY John Nowicky.  John finally had his revenge on the fish this year and weighed in a monstrous 17.71lb mixed sack.  Scott Cocioppo weighed in a large 17.38lb mountain of fish which was "good enough" for a 3rd place finish and a move up to 5th place in the YTD standings.  Fourth place was captured by Steve Duffe with a healthy 17.01lb livewell filling bag.  Wrapping up the top 5 was Shawn Helbig with yet another big sack-o-fish that sent the digital scale to 16.63lbs and enabled Shawn to move up to 6th place in the standings.

Congratulations to all the top finishers and all those that also enjoyed success.  On to Candlewood!

Non-boater Mike Avery wins Greenwood

July 26, 2008

It was a beautiful day on Greenwood Lake; however, it did not pan out to be a great day of fishing.  The lake, which has not so affectionately become known to many as "Deadwood", lived up to its nickname.  18 anglers ventured out on a sunny day with afternoon wind, and only 3 anglers returned with limits.  Small bags, empty bags and disqualifications ruled the day.

Topping the list was Mike Avery, who fished as a non-boater on the back of Andrew Bornn's boat.  Mike weighed in 5 fish for 8.59lbs.  His bag contained a beautiful 3.23lb smallie which helped propel him to glory and share in the lunker pot.  He commended Andrew for his sportsmanship and netting ability!  Congratulations to Mike for his first victory of the year; especially as he captured the win as a non-boater.  Mike may have used some little wormie thingy to catch his fish.

Finishing in second place for the second tournament in a row was John Garbarini.  John reported catching a limit in the first 15 minutes on top water.  He later worked plastics to cull a few out and finished up with 8.35lbs.

Third place went to John Gindhart.  John caught 3 really good fish for 7.12lbs.  His bag anchoring 3.23lb bass tied Avery for a share of lunker.  Congratulations to John on his first top 3 finish of the season.

Rounding out the Top 5 was Andrew Bornn with 3 fish for 4.89lbs and Scott Cocioppo with 5 fish for 4.83lbs.  Next on the schedule is Mahopac Night.  Hopefully, we will all enjoy bigger fish and more of them!!!

Bag of bronze is golden for Loll on Candlewood

July 11, 2008 -

27 United members ventured into the dark on Candlewood for the first night tournament of 2008. Overall it was a comfortable calm night with little wind.  When day break finally arrived, Sean Loll took the top prize with a beautiful bag of smallies which tipped the scales at 15.51lbs.  Sean has been really bringing it to the table since his 1st place finish at last year's NJ Fed Team event.  Congratulations on your first club victory of the year!

A dead fish penalty was all that kept John Garbarini from winning his 2nd club tournament in a row.  Although John weighed in 15.64lb of smallies, the expired fish assessment sent his weight down to 15.26lbs and a 2nd place finish.  John was last seen aimlessly wandering around Squantz mumbling something about Dalton Bobo.

Bill Kanwisher continued his impressive and consistent ways weighing in 11.98lbs for 3rd place.  Mike Avery, fishing as a non-boater, had a strong 4th place showing with11.92lbs.  Pat VanWettering wrapped up the top 5 positions with an 11.50lb sack.

Most anglers reported a tougher than usual night bite.  That being said, some big smallies were caught, including the 5.0lb lunker weighed in by Gary Kanwisher.  8 limits were brought to the scales and the average fish weighed a little less than 2.5lbs.  Topwater seems to have been the prevailiing pattern...but who really knows?!  Greenwood is the next tournament on Saturday, July 26th.
